Why Would I Create A Contest Of This Magnitude where you get to compete in the ‘Trump The Donald’ Contest.
Great question.
Not only will I tell you, but I will show you the power of how to create an idea virus.
Let me first share with you the first of three significant conversations I had with mentors who were all administrators when I was a young Vice Principal.
In fact, it was not long ago I was an elementary school Vice Principal—in fact, four years ago, I was finishing up my last year.
I am going to share the first conversation with you today and save the other two for later posts. This first discussion left a lasting impression on me and relates directly to why I would put everything on the line with the ‘Trump The Donald’ Contest.
Go back with me nine years ago. I was a first year administrator. At that time I was the youngest Vice Principal with our school board and everyone had me fast tracking the administration route to become Superintendent and Director of Education. I had not met Robert Kiyosaki at this point and I certainly had no idea of his Rich Dad Poor Dad concept, and how closely I resembled his Poor Dad!
The conversation happened at my first meeting with a Principal who I was meeting for supper after a frenetic day at school. Bob was his name (and still is! :-)) and he was also a mentor to me. We met at a small restaurant in Corunna, Ontario, Canada, a small town just outside of Sarnia. We had just ordered and our waitress had no sooner poured us a cup of coffee each when Bob put his head down and ran his hands over his hair from the front to the back. It was the kind of self reflective gesture that one makes when one is pondering something deep and profound.
Bob looked at me with piercing eyes and said this to me. It stands out so poignantly, I can almost recite this part of our conversation word-for-word.
“Glenn, I don’t know how you are going to keep your morals by being in administration for all the years that you have before you. I’ve only got five more years to go before I retire, and this job is killing me!”
This was the first time anyone was really frank and open with me about the long-term effects of my decision to advance myself in education.
Bob went on to say, “Glenn, this job changes you. It is so political. The superintendents have their own agenda; parents have their own agenda; the trustees have their own agenda. Everyone has their own agenda and as a principal you are always caught in the middle. Always! Glenn, this job is one where you are constantly dodging landmines…and the problem is, you never know where they are going to explode next.”
I remember this as if we had the discussion yesterday and now it has been nine years ago almost to the day!
It was the first time that I was confronted with the realization that this job was so political. It was the first time that I really realized that all my years of education…all my training to move to the highest level of education, might be all for naught.
Bob and I had our meal and our conversation ended….but the reality of the implications of what I was deciding for my life was confronted head on. Bob and I would go on to become great friends and I would go on to retire out of education before him!
That leaves me with the first point I want to make.
It is crucial that all of us have a wake-up call regarding the decision that we are making for our lives.
As I grew up and took numerous jobs while in school, I was constantly impressed with the fact that most people never tried to play big. It seemed they were more interested in playing to the lowest common denominator. You know the comment that speaks to this…I have heard so many times… “I can’t believe they pay me this to do this!”
Now I can say this today, but it is in a totally different context when I normally hear this stated. It usually is in the context of a job and what one has to do NOT to get fired. This comment speaks to someone who is not inspired and has no intention of playing big in life.
The problem was I was not a normal employee. I had strong ambitions. It was the reason I had earned four degrees and was planning to being a PhD program.
It would turn out that I was to spend another five years as a Vice Principal before I left my job setting two Internet records four years ago.
What I want to share with you today is that I thank God for Bob and for his honesty with me—challenging me to think thru the implications of my choices.
And I want to inspire each of you who have strong ambitions to go for them. That’s why I created an authoring program that has been recognized by Adobe Corp., the world’s first print-on-demand company, BookSurge, consultants to two U.S. Presidents and thousands of clients who have been impacted by this program.
And with the terrible economic downturn that currently faces North America…as I hear about people losing their houses, losing their jobs etc. I remember all too well the difficult financial times I put my family through to go after my legacy, my Big Dream.
As I like to tell people, it was not that long ago that I was going backwards faster than the Boston Celtics were last year, until they made some critical decisions about their future and how to vault themselves forward. One look at the standings today among NBA teams and you will realize how powerful key decisions can be!
As I way of inspiring you to play at the highest level possible, I have combined the release of my new book, Author And Grow Rich: How To Write A Money-Making Book In ONLY 12 Hours with a contest to inspire you to really go for it. You have an opportunity to challenge Donald Trump in our ‘Trump The Donald’ Contest.
